I purchased this filter because the original equipment Subaru filter is more than 2x the cost. The recommended replacement interval is every 12 months, so I thought why dump $20 extra a year when there's a cheaper aftermarket product?
Well, you dump $20 extra so you get something that works. Installation of the filter was straight forward and the instructions beat even the Subaru OE instructions. The filter was very loose fitting inside of the HVAC ducting and did not seal at all or appear to slide/lock into place. It just sits loosely in what appears to be the correct spot.
I didn't notice much of a change in airflow at first, but two weeks after installation I took a 3 hour long road trip in 90 degree heat. I had the A/C on and the fan set 3/4. After about an hour the car interior got hot for some reason and one of my passengers noticed the A/C wasn't blowing very hard. I turned the fan off for a minute and full flow was restored after I turned it back to 3/4.
This same problem recurred about 20 minutes later. At the next stop I was lucky to have a phillips head screwdriver with me and pulled the filter out. It obviously did a good job filtering the air as it had collected a surprising amount of debris. (Though nothing that would actually clog the flow at this point.)
I believe the filter element was collapsing under constant flow and then getting too close and blocking the blower. Note I have not had this problem since I removed the filter. There was also some permanent deformation on the filter element/outer rim that seemed very odd. This might be an OK filter if it had more support / a better frame built into the design.
Save yourself the time, money and frustration and just buy the OE Subaru filter.
